Analytical Chemist and Group
Leader with broad expertise gleaned from more than 25 years in analytical
method development, customer service and problem-solving in the water
treatment industry. Deep knowledge of gas and liquid chromatography,
especially combined with mass spectrometry. Managed all aspects of analytical
method development from concept through pilot plant to full production with
both domestic and international customers. Hands-on approach to group
management, building effective teams by engaging strong individual
contributors in team problem solving.
Recent Method Development &
Problem Solving
- Identification of odor components in sewage
treatment plant atmosphere using SPME (Solid-phase Microextraction) combined
with GC/MS.
- Measurement of degree of functionalization
of a ‘polymeric’ monomer using HPLC and short wavelength UV detection,
making NMR analysis unnecessary.
- In-process measurement of trace, potentially
carcinogenic organics during pilot plant monomer synthesis.
- Transferred locally developed capillary GC
method to Chinese toll-manufacturer, successfully adapting
toll-manufacturer’s non-capillary instrument.
Specific Skills and
Accomplishments
- Hands-on skills include using GC, HPLC,
GC/MS, LC/MS and SEC of water-soluble polymers. Expert in the use and
trouble-shooting of Agilent Technologies (ChemStation) and Waters-Micromass
(MassLynx) software and analytical hardware. Widely experienced in
instrument fault analysis and repair. Most recently installed an Agilent
5973-Inert GC/MS system and converted a HP 5989 GC/MS into a
process-monitoring instrument.
- Researched, specified, purchased and
installed analytical systems to modernize laboratory technology including:
HPLC (High Pressure Liquid Chromatography), GC/MS (Gas Chromatography/Mass
Spectrometry, LC/MS (Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrometry) and SEC
(Size-Exclusion Chromatography).
- Developed, validated, documented and
exercised analytical methods supporting all aspects of the specialty
chemicals/water treatment systems industry.
- Led and managed product complaint
investigations, custom analytical method development and real-time support
of both laboratory and pilot plant scale control methods.
- Provided analytical chemical support for
corporate, as well as purchasing and distribution of laboratory supplies.
- Introduced modern LIMS (Laboratory
Information Management System) to Analytical department which included
training staff to log and manage samples, establishing reporting and
organizational protocols and analytical report composition and distribution
to ensure customer satisfaction. Qualified as Certified System Administrator
– Labware LIMS.
- Developed and installed Access database
which organized analytical methods and allowed easy retrieval by all
involved personnel.
- Organized procedures for departmental
responsibilities as part of ISO 9001 corporate certification.
- Served as liaison between Manufacturing
Department and foreign toll-manufacturers.
