Expertise: Knowledge Useful in Stabilizing Dyes and Pigments to Light Fade. Dr. Saeva is a physical-organic chemist with over 25 years experience in mechanistic organic photochemistry and over 10 years experience preventing photochemistry with the objective of enhancing the light stability of imaging dyes and pigments. He was Chairman of the 1995 Gordon Research Conference on Organic Photochemistry and has 67 scientific publications and 38 US patents..
The light stability of colorants (dyes and pigments) is critically important for their application in imaging, i.e., conventional AgX, inkjet, electrophotographic and thermal dye transfer, as well as in clothing and household materials. The general approach to light stabilization utilizes an understanding of the fundamental scientific processes important in producing light fade.
Consultation will provide the following:
- Direction for the synthesis of more light stable dyes and pigments.
- Advice for light stabilization of existing dyes and pigments.
- A four hour tutorial describing important considerations for enhancing the light stability of dyes and pigments.
- An understanding of the importance of dye photoexcited (singlet and triplet) lifetimes, redox behavior, and radical stability to light stability.
- An appreciation of the influence of dye molecular aggregation, as well as environmental effects, e.g., molecular oxygen, ozone, on dye and pigment light stability.
- A description of environments for dyes and pigments that will enhance their light stability.
