AstraZeneca: New and Exciting Therapeutic Developments

Dr. David Goodale
Director of Clinical Research, AstraZeneca

Abstract: AstraZeneca has been rated as one of the strongest development pipelines in the industry. The compounds in various stages of development will be reviewed and are focused into five major therapeutic areas: Gastrointestinal, Cardiovascular, Respiratory, Oncology and CNS, Pain & Infection. This overview will also focus on how the new therapies are either first in a new class (examples: DIPRIVAN, IRESSA) or best in class (examples: CRESTOR, ZOMIG). AstraZeneca is also a leader in providing new therapies by utilizing in new drug vehicles such as oil-in water emulsions. DIPRIVAN has been the first major pharmaceutical agent in the world to be formulated as an oil-in water emulsion. The unique chemistry of emulsions will be reviewed as well as the implications for future development opportunities. The convergence of new drug development and new devices will also be highlighted as another important trend in successful pharmaceutical development programs.
