November 1997 Meeting

Date & Time: THURSDAY, November 13. Mixer, 5 PM. Talk & business session, 6: 00 PM; Dinner, 7:15 PM. Joint with Philadelphia Section ACS
Topic: Dr. Charles C. Price, "The Future of Chemistry"

Abstract: There is much popular interest in the new visions of the outer regions of our universe, but the new understanding of the infinitesimal world of atoms and molecules is of much greater importance to understanding and benefiting our life here on planet Earth.

We may for example learn as much about the chemistry of the brain as we did of the chemistry of genetics in the 20th century. We will exploit the amazing discovery that organic polymers can be made to be both conductors and reservoirs for electrons. We will make further important progress in unraveling the chemical processes which led to the origin and evolution of life on our planet. Contributions like these will have an important impact on improving life in the 21st century.

I will also comment on the importance of bringing increased understanding of the marvelous universe of chemistry and its impact on society and the public.

Biography: President of the American Chemical Society and United World Federalists; Chairman of Chemical Section of AAAS, the Federation of American Scientists, the Chemistry Department at Penn, the Swarthmore College Board of Directors, and The Chemical Heritage Foundation Board of Directors; author of many of papers, books and patents; known for important contributions to medicinal and polymer chemistry, recipient of numerous national and international awards, candidate for national political offices, ardent sailor... These are only a few of the accomplishments of one of the remarkable chemists of the twentieth century. Born in 1913, Charles C. Price received his B.A. at Swarthmore and his Ph.D. at the University of Illinois. With seven decades of contributions to every aspect of chemistry, a founder of the preeminent organization for the study and dissemination of chemical history (The Chemical Heritage Foundation), Dr. Price is uniquely qualified to comment on chemistry's future.
