Abstract:
Long-term trends in R&D will be reviewed with emphasis on chemical technology and the U.S. chemical process industry. Trends will include the amount of R&D conducted, who is paying for it, and who is doing it. Major shifts have occurred toward the end of this century and will accelerate into the 21st century, radically changing the nature of R&D worldwide. The U.S. chemical industry is a world leader today, largely due to superior technology, but will need new technology to maintain this leadership. The talk will conclude with a recent report addressing this critical issue. Chemical consultants, particularly those consulting in R&D, should be aware of these changes, the issues they raise, and how to keep up to date on future developments.
Biography:
Dr. Jost obtained chemical engineering degrees at the University of Delaware and Princeton University. After teaching at Oregon State University and the University of Pennsylvania, he spent the majority of his career at Sun Oil Company managing R&D and starting new technology ventures. After retiring from Sun in 1991 he served as Executive Director of the Council for Chemical Research until 1997. CCR is a not-for profit organization of U.S. chemical R&D executives from industry, academia, and government dedicated to improving cooperation between the three sectors.
