Date & Time: Wednesday, September 10, 2003 at the Cynwyd Club, Bala Cynwyd, PA; Mixer, 5:30 PM; Dinner, 6:30 PM; Talk and Business Session, 7:30 PM.

Speaker Topic: Persistent Organic Pollutants Dr. Richard Brown, Director of Technology Development, Environmental Resources Management

Abstract: The Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) focuses on the need to reduce and eliminate the release of a certain category of hazardous chemicals into the environment - chemical substances that persist, bioaccumulate and pose a risk of causing adverse effects to humans.

Key elements of the treaty include: 1) new/additional financial resources from developed countries; 2) control measures to eliminate the production and use of intentionally produced POPs, 3) the elimination of unintentionally produced POPs, where feasible and 4) substitution of safer chemicals and processes.

This talk will look at the environmental properties of these compounds and explore why they are persistent. It will also discuss some strategies for remediation. The talk will then explore the implications of the treaty for chemical companies worldwide.

Biography: Dr. Brown is a recognized expert in hydrogen peroxide chemistry and holds several patents in hazardous waste treatment for the use of hydrogen peroxide as a continuous oxygen source in the in situ aerobic biodegradation of petroleum hydrocarbons, for an improved nutrient formulation for stimulating oil-degrading bacteria, for soil treatment using an ambient-air-assisted bioreclamation process, and for the ozonation of recalcitrant compounds

Before joining ERM, Dr. Brown held positions as Senior Technical Consultant for IT Corporation, Vice President for Remediation Technology for Fluor Daniel GTI, Director of Business Development for Cambridge Analytical Associate’s Bioremediation Systems and Technology Manager for FMC Corporation’s Aquifer Remediation Systems.

Following his undergraduate degree in chemistry at Harvard, Dr. Brown got his doctorate in organometallic chemistry at Cornell in 1977.
