Speaker Topic: A Review of Stem Cell research in the US Dr. Ihor Lemischka, Professor of Molecular Biology, Princeton University
Abstract: : Dr. Lemischka will describe and outline the current research in this field, to help attendees better understand controversial aspects as well as goals and important discoveries that could be made.
Biography: Currently, Dr. Lemischka is a Professor of Molecular Biology in the Department of Molecular Biology at Princeton University. He earned his undergraduate degree from John Hopkins in 1976 and his Ph.D. from MIT in 1982 and has authored many articles and books, primarily in the field of hematopoietic stem cells.
In order to ensure normal lifelong blood function and avoid proliferative disorders such as leukemia, the mechanisms that govern the hematopoietic system must be tightly controlled and flexible. The unifying goal of Dr. Lemischka's studies is a direct cellular, molecular, and functional analysis of hematopoietic stem cells. His previous in vivo and cellular studies provide a database with which to evaluate experimental results and his molecular studies provide candidate components of regulatory mechanisms. He believe that an integrated strategy, which encompasses diverse experimental approaches, will be necessary to ultimately unravel the exact mechanisms responsible for stem cell function in hematopoiesis.
