Abstract
This presentation will describe an effort to grow and expand the relationship between the ACS with its 163,000 individual members and senior management of the larger chemical companies (25 to 50 companies). A major objective of this effort is to educate management as to the large array of services they now receive from ACS that are of direct value to their business, such as Chemical Abstracts Services (CAS) and Publications. The bottom line is to use this value add to get management to encourage its employees, who are members of aCS, to take a more active role in the efforts of the Society. Finally there will be a brief explanation of the ACS's Matching Gift Fund.

Biography:
Hank Whalen is the new Director of Industry Relations at the American Chemical Society (ACS). He recently retired after 25 years, the last 12 years as Vice President and Director Corporate Development, from PQ Corporation, a $600 million, privately held, inorganic chemical company.

As a member of ACS for 42 years, Hank has had experience in all areas of governance culminating with his election to Chair of the ACS's Board of Directors in 1999.

Hank's job as Director of Industry Relations is to make senior management at the chemical companies to which ACS members belong, aware of the various services currently being provided them by ACS and to learn what additional services they would find of value. He stresses that more than 60% of ACS's 163,000 members are in industry.

He is a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the Chemical Consultant Network, and the American Chemical Society. He is also a member of the Rotary Club of Frankford. He is currently serving as club secretary and was president of the club in 1979-80.
