Annual Rept. Past Meetings

Date & Time: Thursday, February 18th.  Mixer, 5:00-6:00 PM; Talk, 6:00 PM; Dinner, 7:00 PM. Joint Meeting with the Philadelphia ACS.

Topic: Panel Discussion: Comparison of On-Line Searching vs. Internet Searching.

Abstract: For a while now, it has been possible to get information from on-line databases or to gather it directly from the Internet. Most recently, these two approaches have come together and access to databases is now available through Internet based "windows". The panel will discuss the pros and cons of these various approaches - such as ease of searching cost/speed, or quality of the output - from end-user, Micahel Bigwood, and professional searchers, Edlyn Simmons, Ken Koubek, and Norman Santora, points of view.

BIOGRAPHIES

Edlyn Simmons:
The manager of the Patent Information Group in the Patent department of Hoechst Marion Roussel, Inc., in Cincinnati, Ohio. She received a B.S. and M.S. degrees in chemistry from the University of Cincinnati, and is a registered patent US agent. Her responsibilities include patent searching and U.S. and foreign patent proscecution.

Michael P. Bigwood, PhD:

Since 1995, after a 13 year career in research and research management with a global specialty chemical company, Dr. Bigwood has been helping technology driven companies with the implementation of strategic technology management practices. Through training and consulting services, he provides data gathering techniques and analytical tools that help companies develop a better understanding of their own technology base as well as their surrounding technical competitive environment.

Ken Koubek

Ken Koubek holds an undergraduate degree in Chemistry from Montclair State College and a graduate degree in Business Management from Central Michigan University. Ken is employed as a Senior Information Scientist with Rohm and Haas Company in Spring House, PA. He was an Analytical Chemist with Azoplate Division of American Hoechst, a Quality Control Laboratory Supervisor for ICI Americas, and a Pesticide Residue Chemist in their Agricultural Division for 9 years. He has been an Information Specialist for the last 12 years - as Technical Information Specialist for The Coca-Cola Company and the most recently managing the technical resources of their technical library before joining Rohm and Haas.

Norman J. Santora:

A Medicinal Chemist transformed into a Chemical/Patent/Pharmaceutical searcher for several pharmaceutical companies. He is now a chemical consultant, offering novel services: Forecasting studies with regression analysis, pattern recognition, and quantitative competitive intelligence; Similarity searches which locate in-house compounds with unanticipated biological activities; in addtion, traditional chemical, patent, and biomedical searches.

The topic seems important to both organizations because the Chemical Information Group feels that several of the Chemical Consultants Network members, as well as other non-professional searchers have an unwarranted confidence in Internet searches that they carry out. Ont the other hand, many members of the chemical Consultants Network might be interested in adding searching as specialties for their clients.
