Topic: "Intellectual Property Issues Relevant to Consultants", Dr. Janet Reed

Abstract: As consultants many of us are confronted by intellectual property matters on a regular basis; however, our perspective and approach might be different from those that we might have adopted in the past as an employee.

For example, employees involved in the invention of a patentable product or process typically assign any inventions to their employers as a result of an employment agreement offering the employee no remuneration beyond their regular salary. Such is not necessarily the case for consultants. Options exist, such as obtaining royalties, that might be discussed during the negotiation of a consulting agreement.

On the other hand, we may be faced with an area where interpretation of law may be less clear or where law is evolving. For example, consultants often access a wide variety of data from the internet. Such information is transmitted, interpreted and managed during the course of their work for clients. Dr. Reed will discuss copyright issues as they relate to use of this ever expanding wealth of information.

If these and other intellectual property matters affect your business or if you have questions in this area you should attend this meeting.
